to showcase on AutismDEAL, but until I get some I will continue to fill you in
with stats, facts, and stories.
I know that I am not the only mom who falls to pieces when her son has a bad day. Since our struggle with Autism began, I have been told by many people that I am too easy on Jaxon, and that I need to toughen him up. Well, I believe that would be my decision, thank you very much. I am quite happy with the amount of “coddling”I do.
Today I am going to give you a list of our favorite things to do together when Jaxon has had a bad/rough day.
Going out for a treat…frozen yogurt. This is probably my favorite thing to do. We will make a date out of it and sit and talk about fun things, Halloween, birthday parties, trips to Disney, anything to get his mind off of what happened that day.
Over the top family movie night…this includes building a fort, cooking his favorite gluten free foods/snacks (fondue, sundaes, pizza, etc.) and climbing under the covers while we watch a movie of his choice. Brent and I eventually go to bed and the boys sleep in the fort.
Building something with crafts or Lego's is always a hit. As long as I pull out all of the stops, Jaxon will sit and build things with me for hours. We talk about what we are making, and add some pretend play while we are at it…great for the imagination.
And last, I turn on some candles, turn on some relaxing music, draw him a warm bubble bath with 3 or 4 drops of Lavender oil and let him relax while indulging in a homemade smoothie or GF milkshake. This usually clears his mind and helps him unwind and get ready for bed. My husband laughs at me for this, but deep down he knows how amazing it works (and feels).
What are some of your “pick me uppers” that work for your children on the spectrum?
